Lost Eden

All were in harmony thousands of years ago. You could see the Elvin children laughing and dancing happily with the gnome children, their neighbors and trusted friends. You could see feasts throughout the land between all the races, rulers holding hands and smiling as they watched their peoples enjoy themselves together. The Great Portal to the Otherworld was always open, and the rulers from the Otherworld frequently visited these rich lands. With them they brought their metal toys, showing them to the peoples of the Realm and making them wonder with joy how such a thing could exist. Magic from the realm could do almost anything, but it couldn’t make the metal toys that the Otherworldians brought with them. And their children! How wonderful it was when they laughed with joy, their faces lighting up as one of our elders broke into dance, singing lost tales of pace and harmony with the voice of the Wind. Once…We all lived side by side… Human, Dwarf, Gnomish, Otherworlidian, Elvish, anything, it didn’t matter. You could walk up to any land and be welcomed into homes with open arms. Every being had a deep understanding of every other. Then it changed. The Otherworldians started to fight with each other. The ground would tremble in the Realm from the Great Bombs that they Otherworldians were using against one another. Slaughter. They slaughtered each other, and pulled us down into war with them. Coming over into the Realm they started to recruit the Realms peoples. Selling the people stories of how cruel the other ‘factions’ were to each other, how unfair and unjust, and how they wanted to make everything right for all. Each faction went to the races and told them this, and the Realm ignored it… …At first. Slowly the races chose sides, and when their neighbors choose another, they were no longer neighbors. They were enemies. The link between the races started to fade. Languages changed as they developed their own so the others did not know what they were saying. You could not even talk to your friends, as the Old Tongue died away. The Otherworld peoples had brought their war upon us. Then the portal was gone. The ground stopped trembling. The Otherworldians stopped coming from the world to the Realms. The Realms did not rejoice. The Otherworldians brought anger and hate to the Realm, despise, cruelty, things the Realm had never had before. The broke the bond of friendship, the Link of the Races, the companionship all in the Realm had shared. They shattered the peace of the land. So when the land stopped quaking… … The Realm kept fighting. And the gate to the Otherworld was destroyed. Never would we see their kind here again. But it is said, that the gate does still exist in some way. In some way the two worlds are still connected, and every few thousand years, the portal reopens. The legend goes, however, that it is only open for minutes. And for the portal to close while you are making the crossing is to be lost in time forever. Only those wrongly accused by the hate of another may make the crossing. The realm has not seen any from the Otherworld for thousands and thousands of years. Warpers, they are called. The ones who come from the Otherworld. The war is still not ended, even though the Old King’s and Queen’s who were here at the start of the war have long since perished, soldiers, friends, enemies, gone. The battle wages on. Only the Elvin have any members left alive that remember what it was like before the War of the Realms. And even then they are very old, only living because of the immortality granted by the Seed of Youth. The elves are seen as neutral, their lands seen as a safe haven. They stay out of the war, and keep away from the other races during these bad times. They will not harm anyone or anything, but they will not help either. The elf are the only true neutral race left. It is thought that the only way to restore peace to the Realm is to restore the portal between the worlds, and fix the disaster there first. Only once that is done, may the realm again be back at peace with itself. Warpers are thought to be able to phase between the two worlds, though this is just a myth… …It is thought
